The "S" Bridge is in danger...

If you're familiar with the town of Hertford, you know that one of the most scenic, quaint, and memorable things about the town is the curving little bridge that you cross coming in on Business 17 from the Elizabeth City side. If you don't hear the Andy Griffith theme song in your head when you see that road, you never saw the Andy Griffith show, and I'm a lot older than you are.

Anyway, the road leading to this has been repaired, resurfaced, and worked on for a long time now, and it's being studied again. The study isn't expected to end for several more years, but sadly it seems like they intend for it to end in some new method of acces, skipping that little section of road and likely spelling the end for the longest remaining "S" bridge in the United States.

I don't know if there is something that can be done, or even how to go about finding out, but I'd truly hate to see this landmark pass away from us...I love the town, even though we've only been there five or six years...and I love that bridge.

If I don't update here often enough, you can always find more comments on what is up in Hertford, my life, or my work over at my Live Journal...

I agree David. I've only been to Hertford a half dozen times, but that S-bridge is something that immediately comes to mind when I think of Hertford. It's a unique landmark in a unique little town. I'm definitely out of the loop, but it seems that Historic Hertford Inc. would put the bridge's preservation as a top priority. - Steve T.

Hi again David, I hope you remember me from a few weeks ago when I posted a few comments on your blog. I'm the USCG ET who's moving to Hertford this summer. Let me first apologize for contacting you this way - I couldn't find an email address on your web site - probably because I'm half blind ;) Construction is underway on our home so it looks like the July move is still a go. Anyhoo, over the past couple of years I've put together a family website including a page of links related to Hertford and Perquimans County. Since most of my extended family lives in GA, I thought the page would be an excellent way for them to find out more about the place where we'll be living. Being a Hertford resident and an obvious internet aficionado, I was hoping that you would look it over and tell me if I was leaving anything out.

Thanks in advance,
Steve Todd

Anyhoo - I'm writing to ask you for a favor. Over the past year or so, my wife and I have created a family website including a page devoted to Hertford and Perquimans County. Since most of mine and Lydia's extended family live in GA and are ignorant of all things concerning northeast NC; I thought the page would be a breath saver for Lydia and I. Now for the favor...... Would you please take a look at the page and tell me if I've left anything out? Or if you would recommend anything else?
